SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable Practises

The fabrics we use are made from certified recycled materials, including salvaged fishing nets, plastic bottles, and post-consumer waste. Compared to virgin fabrics, this can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80%, while still delivering the softness, durability, stretch, and performance required for premium swimwear.
All recycled fabrics we use are GRS and U-Trust® certified, offering:
  • UV 50+ protection
  • Resistance to saltwater and chlorine
  • Long-term stretch recovery and durability
To understand how ocean waste became a viable solution for high-performance swimwear, look into the work of Kelly Slater, whose involvement helped bring global attention to sustainable swimwear materials.
You can explore fabric performance in more detail on our Fabrics & Colours page.

Blending Recycled Fabrics

ECONYL®, an Italian company, produces recycled yarns from discarded fishing nets and plastic bottles. These yarns are then purchased by Carvico to create high-quality, flexible fabrics for swimwear.

By blending ECONYL® with materials like Suplex or Extra Life Lycra, the resulting fabric offers excellent stretch and a super soft feel.

What are Ghosts Nets?

“Ghost nets” are abandoned fishing nets that continue to harm marine life, entangling and killing various species, from fish to large mammals. These nets can persist in oceans for up to 5,000 years, causing significant ecological damage. Alarmingly, fishing nets make up about 10% of ocean waste, underscoring the importance of recycling initiatives like ECONYL®’s to address this environmental issue.

Preserving Our Oceans And Biodiversity

Each year, approximately 8 million tonnes of waste, including 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets, enter our oceans. If this trend continues, global studies suggest there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
By working with Swimwear Bali, you’re choosing recycled materials that help reduce ocean waste and support a more responsible production model.

Dyes we use

We dye and print our fabrics using OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified dyes, meeting strict safety and environmental standards.
Each garment is packed in 100% biodegradable cornstracth bags, which decompose naturally in landfill conditions within 24 hours.
Working with us allows your brand to legitimately claim sustainably produced swimwear, supported by real certifications and traceable practices.

Tax-Free

Our parent company, King Trading, is the only garment company in Bali holding a tax-free licence for importing high-grade overseas fabrics, provided they are used in export production.
This facility saves us 35% in import tax, allowing us to price premium recycled fabrics more competitively than other swimwear manufacturers on the island.
This licence was awarded based on strict compliance with Balinese regulations, including:
  • Ethical treatment of employees
  • Full health insurance coverage for every employee, their spouse, and up to three children
  • Water purification for all dyeing and production processes before discharge
  • Donation of leftover fabric scraps to local charities
We use this licence specifically to import recycled fabrics made from salvaged fishing nets and plastic waste.
Note:
Approximately 95% of fabrics used in our production chain are imported via weekly flights from ECONYL®, Carvico® (Italy), and REPREVE® (USA).
We rarely use low-grade locally sourced swim fabrics.

Outstanding Working Conditions

At Swimwear Bali, sustainability extends beyond materials.
Our team works in clean, air-conditioned facilities and earns up to three times the local standard wage. Every employee receives:
  • Full health insurance for themselves, their spouse, and up to three children
  • Coverage for doctor visits, medication, and hospitalisation
  • A daily hot meal, fresh juice, and vitamin supplements
  • A 13th-month annual salary
By investing in our people, we maintain consistent quality and ensure your production is ethically managed from start to finish.

We Give Back

Each month, we support Bali Street Mums, a charity founded by Kim Farr that assists vulnerable women and children in Bali.
The organisation provides food, education, and protection for families living in extreme hardship, while working to prevent child exploitation and trafficking.
